The Stretch Blow Molding Process: A Step-by-Step Breakdown
- Plastic pellets (usually PET) are melted and injected into a preform mold.
- The mold shapes the molten plastic into the preform, with the neck already formed to its final dimensions.
- The preforms are cooled, ejected from the mold, and stored for later use.
- Preforms are loaded into a machine that transports them to a heating station.
- They pass through a series of infrared heaters, which heat the body of the preform uniformly. The neck of the preform is kept cool (using a water-cooled clamp) because it is already at its final size and shape and does not need to be stretched.
- Proper heating is crucial: if the preform is too cold, it won’t stretch properly, leading to uneven wall thickness; if it’s too hot, it may melt or lose its shape.
- The preform is positioned in the blow mold, and the mold closes around it, securing the neck in place.
- A stretch rod (a thin metal rod) is inserted into the preform, stretching it longitudinally to several times its original length. This stretches the plastic molecules along the length of the container.
- High-pressure air (typically 300–500 psi) is blown into the stretched preform, causing it to expand radially and fill the mold cavity. This stretches the plastic molecules outward, creating a biaxial (two-directional) molecular alignment.
- The combination of longitudinal stretching by the rod and radial stretching by the air results in a container with uniform wall thickness and enhanced strength.
- The mold is cooled using water channels, which draw heat away from the plastic.
- Once sufficiently cooled, the mold opens, and the finished container is ejected.
- The container is then inspected for defects (such as uneven walls, cracks, or cloudiness) before proceeding to labeling and packaging.
