Types of Injection Molds

1. Two-Plate Mold:

   • The simplest and most common type, consisting of two plates that separate to eject the part.

2. Three-Plate Mold:

   • Includes an additional plate for separating runners and parts, allowing for automatic runner removal.

3. Hot Runner Mold:

   • Uses a heated manifold to keep the plastic molten in the runners, reducing waste and cycle time.

4. Cold Runner Mold:

   • The runners cool and solidify along with the part, requiring trimming after ejection.

5. Overmolding/Two-Shot Mold:

   • Used to create parts with multiple materials or colors in a single cycle.

6. Insert Mold:

   • Allows for the inclusion of metal or other components (inserts) during the molding process.

How an Injection Mold Works in the Machine

1. Clamping:

   • The mold is mounted onto the injection molding machine, and the two halves are clamped together.

2. Injection:

   • Molten plastic is injected into the mold cavity through the sprue and runners.

3. Cooling:

   • The plastic cools and solidifies within the mold.

4. Ejection:

   • The mold opens, and the ejector system pushes the part out.

5. Cycle Repeat:

   • The mold closes, and the process repeats for the next part.

Materials Used for Injection Molds

Tool Steel:

• High durability and wear resistance. Common grades include P20, H13, and S7.
• Used for high-volume production.

Aluminum:

• Lighter and cheaper than steel, but less durable.
• Ideal for prototyping or low-volume production.
