BEIJING, April 4 - Citizens across China observed the annual Qingming Festival today, a traditional Chinese holiday dedicated to honoring ancestors and celebrating the arrival of spring. Also known as Tomb-Sweeping Day, this year's festival fell on April 4th according to the lunar calendar.

Traditional Rituals and Modern Adaptations

Many families visited cemeteries to clean ancestral graves, offer flowers, burn incense, and make symbolic offerings of food and paper money. "We come every year to remember our grandparents and maintain our family traditions," said Beijing resident Zhang Wei while visiting Babaoshan Revolutionary Cemetery.

In recent years, eco-friendly alternatives have gained popularity, with many opting for online memorials or substituting paper offerings with fresh flowers. Municipal governments organized free shuttle buses to major cemeteries to accommodate the large crowds.

Beyond tomb-sweeping, the festival also marks the beginning of the spring plowing season. Many families took advantage of the three-day holiday to enjoy outdoor activities such as flying kites, picnicking, and hiking - customs collectively known as "stepping on the green."

The famous ancient painting "Along the River During the Qingming Festival" became a trending topic on social media as people discussed its historical depictions of Song Dynasty life.
